Volunteerism: The Friends of the Hog Island Audubon Camp

Located in the Muscongus Bay in Bremen, Maine, the Hog Island Audubon Camp is a 330 acre sanctuary that includes the the longest running environmental education program in the United States. Week-long summer programs focus primarily on ornithology, ecology and conservation, and are open to people of all ages.

This historic island is one of the most pristine island wilderness areas off the coast of Maine, and the camp continues to draw top notch instructors in birding, bird research, nature writing, and photography.

Yet the environmental legacy of the Hog Island Audubon Camp would not be nearly so strong without the support of The Friends of Hog Island, a network of volunteers who serve and assist the camp throughout the summer. The mission of the Friends of Hog Island is to preserve the legacy and support the conservation and nature programs and activities of the Audubon Camp at Hog Island, Maine.

FOHI hosts a service week in the beginning of the camp season. During this week, the volunteers work on a variety of projects that help prepare for the season, from planting gardens to clearing the Island’s hiking trails. FOHI also sends a few volunteers to each camp session who help to ensure that the week runs smoothly. FOHI is also a great way for Hog Island Alums to connect with others who share their interests.
